     John Whitman grew up in a rural area outside of Port Royal, a small town in Pennsylvania.  He graduated from Juniata High School in 1995 and continued his education at Kutztown University.  John earned a B.S. at Kutztown with a degree in Education and a major in Art Education.  After substituting for one year, John moved to South Carolina in 2000 and started teaching full time at Mullins High School in 2001.  At Mullins High, John taught twelve different Visual Art Electives, including Advanced Placement Studio Art, and was the Department Head of Fine Arts.  John has been awarded the Promising Young Professional Award  and Teacher of the Year in 2006.  He also served as a board member for the Marion Arts Council in 2009.


     For the last few years, John Whitman has been working on wood sculpture and other individual projects.  He has showed art at The Art Trail Gallery, Railroad Junction, Metamorphosis Art Collective, Artfields, and Francis Marion University in South Carolina. Since moving to Ohio his work has been show in the Art 101 Gallery in Wooster and Medina, the Akron Art Prize for two years, Valentine Studios, and the Riffe Gallery in Columbus. He has also completed three large murals for Henry Timrod Elementary in South Carolina including the theme  "Wild About Learning," featuring adaptations of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are and two with a "Bistro's Around the World " theme.  He has taught ceramics and Graphic Communications at Highland High School in Medina, and presently teaches art at Towpath Trail High School in Akron, Ohio.  He also offers commissioned art work  and private art lessons to all ages.
